Sketches gallery

This is a little collection to show another aspect of my work, and some of the line and colour styles that I use.

the human condition

This was made for a collection of short thoughts put together in my University times, it's about consciousness being a human condition. I would have to revise that now to bring in a lot of conscious animals, we are just on a higher level of understanding...not that that helps us or anything else for that matter

WAR

Just like the previous sketch, this was made for a collection of short thoughts put together in my University times, but remains one of my favourites, choosing a theme like war is easy in a sense because unfortunately this means it is always a topical issue.

Dave

I have always loved to paint portraits, and this style is my favourite because I can concentrate on the line and then afterward allow the watercolour to supply just a little chaos within them.

This one was painted for a friend on his 30th, it hangs somewhere around Melbourne, Australia...

Hope he deosn't mind me displaying it on the web!!

"This job is getting us nowhere"

is the first frame of this idea for a comic series I began in Munich. This text comes from the main character who is in the rocket blasting off in the distance. I couldn't get the story to get to stick together beyond ideas (lots and lots of ideas) and sketches. Still looking for a good comic writer to help on that one, it comes with a hefty bunch of idea sketches that amount to too much to show in this little website! This example however shows somthing that I love about comic art and that is you can "play" at being an architect, car designer et c. without having to go any further than just show! My favorite part of this sketch is the dog, asleep on the rug! (maybe though it would be more realistic on the sofa!)

Jabber

This beasty was based on a study I made of a spider-crab. It looks like a vector graphic line, but was actually made before my computer days and is made from cut out black paper pasted on white and coloured with cotton wool and chalk...if I had only known then how easy photo editing can be it would have saved hours!!

Dragonfly study

I found this dragonfly in early autumn in Bavaria, it was totally out of energy but still alive. I sketched it and tried to stay as true to the real thing as possible, including all of the wing cells, it is one of my dreams to find another one and to reproduce the structure of the wings in balsa wood, the design and beauty is simply amazing

Reincarnation Part Two

Not a lot to say about this one, except that I was thinking about reincarnation. Not quite along the Buddist lines though. I sketched it out around the same time as the first couple in this page, like a lot of aspects of my life it was just a phase

Armour designs

I don't think these two are going to be in my website for long...too rough and lacking a background! I'll just mention for now that I DO like the bottom body armour design, it was initially going to be part of a Flash intro to the website but that is still a work in progress.
